![]() ![]() The collection also boasts works by Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Hebert Bayer, who were leaders in the development of European Modernism and taught at the Bauhaus. Edward and Tullah Hanley of 75 modern objects further expand this collection area. This expansive group of artworks, accessioned between 1950-1966, includes one hundred fifty modern examples from the School of Paris, German Expressionism, and American Modernism. The Charles Francis Hendrie Memorial Collection, augmented by gifts from his daughter-in-law Marion Hendrie, provides a foundation for early Modernism. The department's central goal is to acquire artworks that "tell the story of our times through the collection.” The collection has accordingly grown through a combination of gifts, bequests, and purchases. The museum began to celebrate art of its time by collecting works in the early twentieth century by Frederic Remington, Henri Matisse, and Aristide Maillol-purchased within a few years of their creation. Contemporary internationally-renowned artists include new German painters, young British artists, as well as Chinese, Latin American, and American artists. The distinguished mid-century collection includes works by Robert Motherwell and Herbert Bayer, as well as paintings by pioneering women artists of Abstract Expressionism. Areas of strength in the historic collection include representation of artists from the School of Paris, Alfred Stieglitz’s cohort of artists, and Surrealism. Since its founding in 1978, the department of modern and contemporary art has grown from fledgling roots into a collection of more than 7,000 artworks made between 1900 and today.
